I’ve learned a few things since rejoining the world. I’ve learned that I adore libraries, I love Chinese food, and I hate rap music. I’ve learned that penguins amuse me, the internet fascinates me, and long-distance telephone commercials can make me tear up.

And I’ve learned that the word faithful doesn’t have the connotations of respect attached to it that it once did.

If you say the word faithful to a person, they immediately think of a dog or, worse, a blind follower of a religion or political platform. As though it doesn’t take thought or commitment. As though you must be weak minded or deluded. It’s become a punch line, being faithful.

I never felt stupid or meek for choosing to walk such a hard path. Many times I had to call on strength I wasn’t sure I had to hold the line I’d drawn for myself. I resent being thought of as a doormat, referred to as passive, called yielding or spineless . If my faithfulness was a punch line, I never quite found it funny as I spent lifetimes proving my love and loyalty for my husband, Loki. It was hard. It was arduous. It was a conscious choice, because to do anything less would have been utterly without honor, dignity or worth. Even knowing what I know now, I would make the same choice all over again.

If I’m remembered for nothing but my fidelity, I can live with that. More than that, I’m proud of it. It means that my actions had weight, that my accomplishments had value. It’s a good thing to be remembered for, being faithful.
